‘I just want to warn you. You’re going to dive to the end of the cave. You’re going to see these kids. They’re all looking healthy and happy and smiley. Then, you’re going to swim away, and they’re probably all going to die.’
A signature event on Mackay’s Calendar, the popular Whitsunday Voices Literary Dinner returns for another memorable evening to celebrate the conclusion of the 2022 Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival.
Enjoy a delightful three course dinner, meet and mingle with this year’s Festival Presenters in a relaxed environment, and be captivated by this year’s Keynote Speaker, Dr Richard Harris!
Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris has worked in anaesthesia, diving, and aeromedical retrieval medicine. His passion for cave diving goes back to the 1980’s and has taken him to the corners of the globe in search of new adventures.
Dr Richard Harris played a crucial role in the remarkable international rescue of a teenage soccer team from a flooded Thai cave system. In 2018 the world watched and held its breath as one by one, against almost impossible odds, the members of the Wild Boar Soccer team were rescued after being trapped deep in a cave system in Thailand for 17 days.
Richards’ heroic efforts saw him awarded the Star of Courage; the Medal of the Order of Australia; the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn; and 2019 Australian of the Year with dive partner Dr Craig Challen.
His incredible tale – of true courage and heroism - is recounted in his book ‘Against All Odds’ and the compelling documentary ‘The Rescue’.
End the evening dancing the night away to popular tunes from our live band!
