Travel the world in a single afternoon and celebrate our diverse cultural communities that together make up our proud Mackay region.

This free community event will feature an array of performances from multicultural artists, local community groups, and a range of talented musicians.

Get your groove on or take part in the many activities and workshops on show throughout the event. Browse the market stalls or tantalise your tastebuds with the array of both local and exotic foodie delights. This event is not to be missed!

Global Grooves is an initiative of Mackay Regional Council and the MECC.

Fiesta Tropicale

Get ready for rhythm, colour, and carnival energy – Fiesta Tropicale is here to light up the stage! This sought-after group of musicians and dancers brings the irresistible joy of Latino Caribbean culture to life. With horns and drums blasting, they blend authentic folkloric Latino rhythms with rock, pop, and contemporary flair – all wrapped in Spanish and English vocal harmonies. Their performances are a celebration of movement, music, and multicultural magic – a true fiesta you won’t want to miss!

Piping MaD

Formed five years ago, their mission is to fuse the powerful sound of traditional Scottish bagpipes with the energy of rock, pop, and contemporary music. They blend classic bagpipe tunes with modern Western hits, creating a high-energy style that connects audiences of all ages to a vibrant part of Scottish culture – one they might not otherwise get to experience. So whether you’re a fan of tradition or modern beats, this performance is sure to get your toes tapping.

Mackay Malayalee Association

The Mackay Malayalee Association brings the vibrant culture of Kerala to life through traditional and contemporary dance performances. From the classical elegance of Mohiniyattam to the festive unity of Thiruvathira Kali, and the cinematic flair of Bollywood and Onam-themed dances, their showcases offer audiences a rich tapestry of Kerala’s heritage, hospitality, and artistic expression.

Global Grooves is an event the Filipino Community looks forward to every year – and we’re so glad to have them back! The Filipino Australian Community proudly showcases their rich heritage through food, songs, and dances. As one of the founding participants of Global Grooves, the Mackay Filipino Australian Community has been part of this celebration since the very beginning. Their commitment to sharing culture and connecting with others reflects the heart of Mackay’s multicultural spirit. We invite you all to enjoy the flavours, rhythms, and stories of the Philippines – through their delicious food and vibrant performances.

Thai Aussie Community Mackay

The Thai Aussie Community – long-time participants in Global Grooves! Their performance today showcases the graceful beauty of traditional Thai dance and music, a celebration of culture that blends elegance, rhythm, and storytelling. Through delicate movements and vibrant costumes, they share the spirit of Thailand – a culture rich in history, harmony, and artistic expression.

Latin Roots

Latin Roots

Latin Roots Ensemble is a Mackay-based collaboration that blends live guitar, percussion, dance and voice.

Ricardo, from Lima, Peru, brings the influence of folklore and his background in rock and pop bands. María, from Argentina, adds expressive dance and artistic storytelling. Together they create vibrant performances that celebrate Latin heritage and cultural diversity through music and movement.

Natiding Art

Natiding

Natiding Art represents Papua New Guinea. It is about valuing and passing on the indigenous knowledge of the Gunantuna people of East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. The indigenous knowledge of the Gunantuna people is known as the Buai – which includes songs, dances and rituals. Buai, commonly known as betelnut or areca nut, is a term from Gunantuna language which also means Knowledge. Part of the Buai is learning about the Talking Drum – which is the traditional means of communication for the Guanantuna people whereby rhythmic patterns are jolted on the Gaaramut, which is a wooden drum (traditional instrument), the rhythmic patterns convey messages. This performance is about sharing the celebration of knowledge gain.

Indonesia Mackay Community

Indonesia

Through their performance, the Indonesia Mackay Community will be sharing the spirit of Bhineka Tunggal Ika – a powerful national motto that means ‘Unity in Diversity.’ These dancers come from different provinces across Indonesia, each with their own unique traditions and stories. Yet today, they stand together as one – united in their love for culture, community, and country. Their dance is a beautiful symbol of harmony, strength, and the shared journey of building a nation together.

Mackay Zimbabwe Association

These young performers are all school-going kids with a deep passion for their Zimbabwean heritage. Today, they’ll be sharing two traditional songs that celebrate the marimba – a vibrant and expressive instrument central to Zimbabwean music and storytelling. These songs were previously performed at the Africa Day festival, and we’re thrilled to have them bring this joyful energy to Global Grooves. Through music and dance, they share stories and traditions, proudly teaching others about their culture. Their love for learning and connecting through rhythm shines in every beat.

Claddagh School of Irish Dance

Claddagh

Claddagh School of Irish Dance has been sharing the joy of Irish dance within the Mackay community since 2008. Led by director Collette Shields, an internationally qualified teacher, adjudicator, and examiner, the school offers classes for dancers as young as 18 months through to adults, from beginners to World Champions. With a focus on community, culture, confidence, and creativity, Claddagh dancers perform regularly at local festivals, aged care facilities, and cultural celebrations. Their performance troupe, Elevation, showcases both the power and grace of Irish dance – blending traditional rhythms with modern flair. Audiences can expect dazzling footwork, lively music, and the unmistakable spirit of Ireland bought to life.
