World-class facility offers more accessibility for patrons with mobility restrictions

The popular Morning Melodies are on the move and more accessible than ever.

The first event of the 2019 MAP Pharmacies Morning Melodies series will be staged at the MECC tomorrow (Friday, February 13).

Patrons will now be able to enjoy each of the six Morning Melodies performances in the plenary halls of this world-class facility.

“Feedback has shown that some of our community members with mobility issues felt restricted accessing the theatre,’’ said MECC and Events manager Andrew Bobeldyk.

“The MECC is always looking for ways to make patrons’ experiences more enjoyable,’’ he said.

“Therefore, we have decided to move the Morning Melodies series to the plenary halls where there is flat flooring all the way through the building.

“Also, patrons will be able to access the building from all sides, including from Macalister Street, which will decrease the distance to be walked from car parks for some.”

The MECC is the largest convention centre between Cairns and Brisbane. This state-of-the art $29 million facility comprises multiple versatile spaces, including two plenary halls which, when fully extended, seats more than 1450 patrons.

“Morning Melodies patrons will be now able to enjoy this world-class facility, with ticket prices kept low at $15 per person, thanks to sponsor MAP Pharmacies,” Mr Bobeldyk said.

“Audience members will find that not only is the venue more accessible, but there are more toilets available, a bigger and more open space, multiple entry points to the venue and seating arrangements that suit the style of the performance,” he said.

“A more spacious layout and general admission entry will allow patrons with mobility aids to easily move around and choose a seat of their choice.

“Our first event of the series this Friday is a celebration of dance, with songs from Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack and Nat King Cole. You’ll be hard pressed to resist singing and dancing your way through the swing era.”
