LOCAL FASHION DESIGNER CREATES FRESH NEW VEST FOR MECC VOLUNTEERS

Jason Chetcuti, Designer / Director of Chetcuti Couture, is a creative Haute Couture fashion designer and experienced high-end fashion retailer. Paris-trained in draping, pattern design and hand sewing, he has the combined experience of creating bespoke garments for clients over the past 25 years.

“Growing up in Mackay, the experience of attending a Theatre event at the MECC was always inspiring. Much of the Mackay community are well versed with iconic representations of the MECC including architectural design and images of artists that have performed at the venue.

I was delighted to work on this project as I could photograph these elements and create a bespoke fabric print. Working with the committee to develop a concept design that would best represent the MECC was a very exciting process” Mr Chetucuti said.

Friends of the Theatre was established in 1987 when the Mackay Entertainment Centre was nearing completion. Today, volunteers of the Centre are referred to as Friends of the MECC. The Friends of the MECC are dedicated to supporting the centre by providing a large, volunteer workforce for the centre.

The idea of new vests began during a Friends committee meeting in 2020, where members suggested a revamp to the traditional red vests which had become an icon for Mackay’s first theatre.

Friends of The MECC President, Colleen Farry spoke highly of both Jason and the new look vests. “Jason designed the original vests, so it was an easy decision to make him part of the revamp”.

“Each vest is unique – they’re truly a work of art! They will be worn with pride for many years to come”.

100% Australian made; the vests made their debut to Mackay audiences when John Williamson recently visited the region for his 50-year celebration concert.
To congratulate the committee for their ongoing hard-work and to celebrate the new look, John Williamson joined the group for a photo opportunity before the performance.
