International Circus Collaboration To Tour Mackay

Circa Contemporary Circus is delighted to announce that their latest production, Shaun the Sheep’s Circus Show, has adapted the global phenomenon TV character for the circus stage and is coming to Mackay.

The Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre will host performances from 17-18 July.

Shaun the Sheep’s Circus Show is being supported by the Queensland Government through a unique partnership, comprising investment from Arts Queensland funding via the Queensland Arts Showcase Program, Screen Queensland, QPAC and Merrigong Theatre Company as the Presenting Partners.

The project has also been made possible by the Federal Government’s Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (Rise) fund.

Queensland Minister for the Arts, Leeanne Enoch said Shaun the Sheep’s Circus Show would be another showstopper from the internationally acclaimed Brisbane-based company.

“Circa continues to take Queensland audiences on exciting journeys into the world of circus and physical theatre,” Minister Enoch said.

“The Palaszczuk Government supports Circa with annual funding as one of Queensland’s five major performing arts companies and has also provided Circa with an additional $120,000 to support Shaun the Sheep’s Circus Show through the Queensland Arts Showcase Program.

“Our investment in Circa means audiences across the state can enjoy this world premiere production which combines the iconic animation of Shaun the Sheep with the company’s world-renowned acrobats.”

“The arts is key to delivering the Palaszczuk Government’s plan for economic recovery, each year injecting $8.5 billion into the state’s economy and supporting more than 92,000 jobs for Queenslanders.

“Since the onset of COVID-19 the Palaszczuk Government has committed to nearly $60 million worth of initiatives to support the arts and cultural sector, which includes the $22.5 million Arts and Cultural Recovery Package,” Ms Enoch said.

Circa Artistic Director, Yaron Lifschitz, says “The true achievement of Shaun the Sheep is to entertain across generations with hypnotising action sequences, a sharp wit, typical of Aardman productions, and an innocent sense of adventure. The spirit of Circus aligns with these qualities perfectly and we’re delighted to be extending Shaun’s Circus Show adventure with seasons in Cairns and Mackay.”

Scenic Designer Dan Potra and Costume Designer Libby McDonnell have created a new world for Shaun and his flock to inhabit, seamlessly blending the dimensions of animation, stage, film and live acrobatics.

Audiences will be treated to a visual spectacle, with Aardman’s signature Shaun the Sheep animation, combined with live performance from Circa. Shaun the Sheep’s Circus Show is packed full of smart wit and outright hilarity, as Circa simultaneously blurs the lines between movement, dance, theatre and circus.
